On Monday, Jan. 30, a routine drug surveillance stop turned ugly. While Wayne County Sheriff’s deputies were arresting a man suspected of buying drugs, the man managed to get in his car and drive away, dragging one of the deputies along in the process.
After being dragged almost half a mile down Harper in Detroit, the deputy shot and killed the suspect.
Sheriff Benny Napoleon said, “According to witnesses and the officer, he had yelled at the subject several times to stop the car and he refused. At the point in time that the deputy feared his safety, fired two shots after ordering him to stop several times and he refused. The deputy fired a couple times from his weapon and the subject was fatally wounded.”
The deputy involved was taken to the hospital and is in serious condition but is expected to be OK.
